Luxury Safari and Photography Tours
What drew us to the safari with Discovery Photo Tours was the small group setting. We’ve taken several safaris throughout the continent of Africa and know that the experience is only as good as the truck you are in.
Having been in safari jeeps with just the two of us to a packed vehicle with 10 people, we know how important it is to keep groups small.
With only 4 people in a jeep, you’ll never miss the opportunity to click those memorable images.
Check out more images we took on our last trip to Tanzania.
We’ve also done bare bones safaris and luxury safaris throughout Africa. And we can attest, nothing compares to coming back to a luxurious five-star set up after a day on the African Savanna. If you are going to invest in a once in a lifetime trip to Africa, it should be in style.
It’s on many a bucket list to stay in a deluxe safari tented camps and luxury world class lodges set in the middle of the Savanna. And let me tell you, it is worth the hype.
Each vehicle will have a local guide/driver and Pro photographer.
Local guides are important to lead the tours as they know where to spot the best wildlife and share their local experience. We believe in traveling locally and learning from the people who grew up in the area.
The Itinerary Breakdown
This photography tour is a dream itinerary through Tanzania starting in Arusha.
We’ve personally been to every location and can give you a breakdown of what to expect each day of the tour.
Ken and his company meticulously scouted the destination as well and they hand picked the deluxe luxury accommodations and expert local guides who have a deep knowledge of the terrain and wildlife. Here’s what you can expect!
Day 1 – Arrive in Arusha (Aug 19)
The first day starts in Arusha where you’ll transfer from Kilimanjaro airport to Tanzania’s capital city. All guests will come together at night for a welcome dinner and to get to know one another.
Day 2 – Tarangire National Park (Aug 20)
Tarangire National Park is an excellent introduction to a safari in Tanzania. It is one of the smaller national parks in Tanzania and it is completely surrounded by an urban area making it quite unique. It was here that we saw elephants, wildebeest, buffalo and zebras walking to the watering hole and it is probably the best park for spotting ostrich.
Day 3 – Ngorongoro Crater (Aug 21)
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most picturesque settings in Africa. It’s like a fairytale of wildlife and nature. It is the largest unbroken and unflooded caldera in the world with a high density of wildlife species living in harmony within its 8,292 square kilometers. It seemed almost like a painting when we stopped to watch animals grazing within the Acacia and Baobab trees.
Day 4 – Lake Manyara (Aug 22)
Lake Manyara is a must stop on safaris to witness the millions of flamingoes, pelicans and storks that flock to the alkaline lake. It’s a bird lovers paradise, but you’ll also have a good chance of spotting the tree climbing lions and a huge population of baboons. During our visit to Lake Manyara, we spied an incredible scene of two dozen giraffes standing like statues on the sandy beach.
Day 5 – Flight to Serengeti North for Mara River Crossing (Aug 23)
When on other safaris, you are either stuck in the north of the Serengeti or the South. This tour takes you to both and there is no time wasted as we catch a flight to see the North Mara River Crossing. Dave and I haven’t been to the Serengeti during the migration and are extremely excited about witnessing the yearly migration hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras making their annual trip to Kenya’s Masai Mara.
Day 6 – More Serengeti North (Aug 24)
This is an area that needs more than one day of travel, so we board our jeeps for another day of safari to view lions, leopards, both black and white rhinos, cape buffalo, elephants and more! In this part of the Serengeti you’ll have the opportunity to see the nile crocodile too!
Day 7 – Serengeti Central (Aug 25)
The Serengeti is a photographers dream and having the opportunity to take several legendary game drives for optimal wildlife viewing. On top of viewing the big 5 (Buffalo, Rhinos, Elephants, Leopards and Lions) you will see cheetahs, zebras, impalas, wharthogs, monkeys and more.
One day is never enough to visit the Serengeti.
Day 8 – Serengeti to Zanzibar (Aug 26)
After one last game drive through the Serengeti, we board a plane to the island paradise of Zanzibar.
When we climbed Kilimanjaro in 2008. we escaped to Zanzibar for some well needed R&R and we fell in love with the island. It is one of the most beautiful destinations on earth and we are so thrilled that this safari includes a few nights at the beach. Tonight is all about relaxing and processing all the amazing animals you saw on safari.
Day 9 – Free Day Zanzibar (Aug 27)
Today you can relax at the luxury resort and take in the turquoise beaches of Zanzibar. After a week of Safari, you’ll want to relax and sleep in to make up for those sunset game drives and early morning wake up calls. It’s now your time to chill and enjoy 5 star luxury.
Day 10 – Stonetown (Aug 28)
This is a day to explore and take a guided tour of Stonetown. It’s a fascinating city and Planet D side note: Freddie Mercury was born here! Take a look at his childhood home and visit the Freddie Mercury Bar. Get lost in the maze of streets and keep up your photography by taking shots of the famous doors of Stonetown. It’s up to you how to spend your final days in Africa.
Day 11 – Zanzibar (Aug 29)
Zanzibar is an island you’ll never want to leave and luckily this photo safari offers several days to explore. This is a day to enjoy some water sports and go snorkelling or diving. Or take a tour of the island and see its many beaches in the North to our personal favourite Nungwi Beach. Tour the old fort, learn of the prison island or take a spice tour. Zanzibar was known as spice island and a large part of its industry is the spice trade.
Day 12 – Departures (Aug 30)
Today you say goodbye to the new friends you met and jet off back home to share the amazing experience with your friends and family.
